Anyone tried the Your Baby Can Read program?
Has anyone on here tried the YBCR program? Was it worth the money that you paid for it? I’m thinking about trying it with my 9 month old, but hubby is optomistic about it.
So could I do just as good going to WalMart or something and getting the flash cards with words on them and achieving the same effect?
I have two girlfriends that have tried it with their children and for both, it’s worked remarkably. One has a 24-month old (she started using the program when her baby was just under one year) and she speaks in full sentences, can read numerous words out of her books, and recognizes words if you show them to her.
I agree though with some of the people above…if you’re not able to put the time and energy into it OR if your child just isn’t interested in looking at the videos or the reading materials given, it won’t work. My friends were both diligent about how they used the program and both babies were very receptive.
A scam? NO. But definitely not for everyone.

I purchased it for about $60 on ebay and can tell you my 9 month old won’t even watch it. I can say he isn’t interested in any tv though. He just won’t look at the screen so I am going to wait and try again in a while. It can’t work if your child won’t watch the dvd’s.

I’m not a mom,but I highly doubt it works for all babies. You would have to spend all day & night with them to get them to read. And the baby has to be cooperative to be learning to read. They are scamming you for money.Only God knows how much time those parents spent with their LO teaching them to read.

Its a waste of money.
hahaha this is always asked. it doesnt work. what works is spending time with your baby just talking to them and reading books to them.

Its a scam. They make you pay so much money for the program.

Nope, and I wouldn’t recommend it. The only ‘program’ you need to encourage your baby to read is a lot of books, appropriate to her age (picture books and simple stories), and lots of time sitting on mom and dad’s laps looking at the books together. (And also let her see YOU and hubby reading for pleasure, so she learns that books are a fun way to spend time.)
A program like YBCR may well teach your baby to put together a few symbols with the words they mean (in the same way that many toddlers quickly come to recognize that golden arches mean "McDonalds" and my 2 year old daughter confidently told me one day that the billboard for a local RiteAid pharmacy said "Drug store" (because that’s how I always referred to it) …. but that’s not reading.
Few children are capable of really reading much before 4 or 5 … and if your baby IS one of those few, then the abovementioned books and reading time will help her make the leap just as easily, and much more pleasurably, than hours in front of a DVD and flash cards.
Finally, children who are taught to read through such programs at an early age show no lasting benefits. By 2nd or 3rd grade, their peers have caught up with them.
Save your money.
EDIT: Skip the flashcards too. Again, they aren’t going to ‘teach’ anything but a few sight words, which she can also get from books.
