Baby Sign Language – Yes and No
Sunday, April 11th, 2010As a parent, it is likely that you frequently find yourself repeating yes and no to your baby, hoping to teach them and help them understand things that they should be doing and things they should not. American Sign Language can help you to communicate yes and no to your baby more easily (even from across a room) and also help them to better understand you.
To sign no, your pointer and middle finger should snap down on your thumb. To sign yes, shake your fist up and down as if nodding your head. It is also very important to remember to use facial expressions when signing, since sign language is such a visual language. When signing no, it would be most effective to make an angrier or firm face. On the other hand, when signing yes, it would be best to smile and make a happier, more supportive face.
I have found a book that I think would be especially useful for you to read and sign to your baby. It is titled No No Yes Yes by Leslie Patricelli. The only words in the book are yes and no. There is a picture on each page of a baby doing something wrong, and doing something right on the opposite page. For example, one page shows a baby dumping a bowl on his head and “no, no” is written above it. The next page shows a baby eating out of a bowl and the words “yes, yes” is written above it. This is a very visual book on its own, and adding signs will make it even more visual and easier for your baby to understand.
Remember to keep in mind that it is not necessarily important for your child to be able to sign the words, but most important that parents sign them regularly. This will ensure that the child will recognize and understand the signs and know if they are doing something right or wrong.

Preparing Your First Child for the New Babies Arrival
Sunday, April 11th, 2010Include Your Child From the Beginning
Include your child in the new baby’s arrival from the very beginning. Tell him or her that they are about to become a big brother or sister. Be sure to express to your child how important his role in the family will be and the benefits that this will have. Assure your child that you will love him just as much as always and that the new baby will be someone else who will love him too. Teach him that he will be loved more than before. Allow him to help with making decisions regarding the baby. Even a two year old will appreciate being included and helping in the decision making process. For example take him shopping with you to buy punk rock baby gifts, let him choose between two choices which he thinks the new baby will like the best.
Let him help decorate the nursery
Even if that help is confined to putting small objects on a low shelf let him help. Perhaps you can allow him to pick out a special toy for the baby that is from his big brother or sister. Another option may be giving your older child a new toy and explain that the new gift is from the baby. As your pregnancy progresses allow him to feel the baby move, answer his questions and read him books so he understands that the reason mother’s body is changing is because of the baby.
Make Your Child Feel Special and Needed
Any young child is bound to feel a bit jealous when they see all the new things that the baby is getting like punk baby clothes from showers. Having a completely separate big brother or sister celebrations where you suggest that your friends bring a small gift for your older child can combat this feeling. Offering a gift or two just because he has a new role in the family will go a long way in helping make your first born fit into his new role.
Show You Child the Hospital Nursery
If at all possible arrange with the hospital staff to take your child on a tour of the delivery room and nursery. Expressing that this will be where your new brother or sister will stay until arriving home. Tell him or her that you need them to keep dad company until your return, so they will feel like they are helping at this very special time. If you want your child to really look forward to the new baby coming home then give your child a little talk that everything is going to be just fine. Continuing to include them once the baby is born will make for an easier adjustment for both you and your first born.
Tips On How To Solve A Baby Sleep Problem
Sunday, April 11th, 2010An essential basis for a child’s future health and development is good quality sleep. It can be torture for a parent when their baby is crying because she can’t go to sleep, but having the baby in a sleep routine and seeing them happy is a pleasure hardly measurable.
A very important step in solving a baby’s sleep problem is to teach them to get into a regular, fuss-free, sleep routine.
You should seriously considering establishing some sort of bedtime routine for you baby if you haven’t done so yet. Your baby will more than likely sleep through the night, be more content and happier if you stick to a routine and establish a sleeping pattern.
Read the tips below to find out several things you could do to establish a bedtime routine for your baby:
Most of us have some kind of winding down routine before we go to sleep and this should be no different for your baby. Perhaps the sleep routine could begin with a bath, followed by a slow dimming of the lights (so they realise it is getting near to sleep time), then a change of nappy or diaper, putting them in the crib or cot and finishing with a bedtime story or lullaby.
You don’t need to follow the above routine to the letter, you may wish to do it in a different order, or have a different routine entirely, but the important thing is that you create a baby sleep routine that you follow night after night after night until it becomes a habit for your child.
Whenever you begin this routine, your baby will know that sleep is expected to follow. Babies and infants are creatures of habit, they enjoy the predictability of a sleep ritual and so a regular routine like this can help settle your baby more quickly and also increase the chances of him or her sleeping through the night.
Providing a routine and the same sleep environment each time is crucial to providing the ideal scenario for restful baby sleep.
Remember that you should start your baby’s bedtime routine in her early weeks of life. It is crucial that you start earlier rather that later, but if your baby is older, you should start to get her into a bedtime routine as soon as possible.
If you alread have some type of sleeping routine created for your baby but she’s still having baby sleep problems, you should take a closer look at the bedtime routine that you have created for her and see if you can improve it. It might be something in the routine that your baby doesn’t like or she doesn’t like the routine at all. It might also be that you are not consistent enough with the bedtime routine and that consistency needs improvement.
Babies need sleep right through the day and by creating a daily naptime routine will also help your baby to sleep at night time.
