How To Choose Where Your Baby Will Be Born
How do people make choices about health care? How, for example, does a pregnant woman decide whether her baby should be born at home or in hospital? There are all sorts of influences at work upon her, some of which she will be aware of and some of which will affect her quite unconsciously. She may be influenced by what she has seen on television and at the cinema and by newspaper articles, magazines and books she has read. Perhaps more significantly, she might be influenced by her own mother and where she had her babies. If her mother had home births and enjoyed them, or had hospital births and felt very satisfied there, she might feel that she will be happy with the same thing.A woman may be influenced by the experiences which her sister(s) or other relatives have had. The stories she is told by her close friends about the local hospitals or about home births may have a profound influence on her. Most women choose to give birth in hospital because they think hospital is the safest place for a baby to be born. The same view does not necessarily hold amongst women in other countries; in Holland, for example, it has been and still is quite usual to give birth at home and the government provides women with home nurses for a few weeks after they have delivered their babies. By contrast, government policy in the UK from 1970 to the early 1990s was to aim for 100% hospital delivery. In 1993, however, an Expert Maternity Group set up by the government, concluded that there is no clear statistical evidence that having babies away from general hospital maternity units is any less safe for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. It may be that society will now reconsider its attitude towards home birth, and that more women will choose this option as doctors and midwives start explaining to them that it is fine to have their babies at home.
