Whatever the merits of this book, it does not address the question that it is intended to, viz “How to teach your baby to read.” This book does not provide any tools that may be used to teach your child how to read. This book is an overview (pretty straightforward and intuitive) of various theories of child learning, stuff like “it’s never too early to learn” or “learning must be fun” (I am quoting these from memory since I immediately returned the book unread). If you are searching beyond the obvious, you will most likely be left pretty dissatisfied. What’s more, despite being presented as a serious pseudo-scientific manual the book presents absolutely no data whatsoever to back up assertions like “it’s never too early to learn”.
I am going to copy-paste this review to this other title, “Native Reading: How To Teach Your Child To Read, Easily And Naturally, Before The Age Of Three” by Timothy D. Kailing, as they left me with the same impression for the same reasons.

For whatever reason the scathing review I wrote about this book is missing, so I’ll try to rewrite it from memory. We bought all of Mr. Doman’s books, ‘bits of intelligence cards’ etc. for our infant daughter. I am an avid reader, and was eager to pass on this love to my child. I poured over this book, and was absolutely astonished to find NO MENTION of reading out loud to your baby as a method for teaching them to love books, and thus desire to learn to read. In fact, the books that the baby learns to ‘read’ (purchased from Doman, of course) are poor quality, uninteresting and lame!
Instead of reading this book, buy something by Troxel about “Great Books to Read Aloud” and go from there. We dropped this entire method by the time my daughter was a year old, and she learned to read on her own at age 3.5, now at age 7.5 she read the new Harry Potter book in under a week, spells at high school level and is always begging me to go to the library.
Shut off the TV, choose some excellent books (Blueberries for Sal, The Maggie B come to mind) and read with enthusiasm to your little one. Don’t be afraid to try more advanced books either. Especially good are books on tape while you are in the car.
Most importantly, have fun, cuddle together and read, don’t kill it with drill!

There are plenty of HOW-TO books out there the will tell you what they intend to do but when it comes to the how there is no information at all. You are left to your own devices or they point you towards their catalogue or website for further information (read: buy stuff from us).
At this point in time I can not tell you whether or not the methods described in the book work or not but I can tell you if you want to know what the method is, how it came to be and how you can proceed to apply it then yes this book is 100% what is claims to be.
It tell you exactly where to begin, what you need, how to set it up and so on and so on.
I was very sceptical of this book after reading some of the reviews but now i can not wait to try it. Expect another review in a year or so if you want to know if it really works as well.

I first used this book about 47 years ago and had one of the first published sets of materials with the cards and the companion book “Nose is Not Toes”. Both of my girls learned to read before starting off to school and went on to become avid readers and writers. The book I just purchased is for one of my daughters who has begun to use it with her two year old. More than just tools for teaching, the book explains why it works.

My daughter is 14 yrs old with Prader Willie Syndrome (delays mentally and physically). She learns to read and write English using the Phonics system about 7 yrs old. As we’re in Hong kong, we switched her to a local Chinese special school for disabled kids last September so she will learn some Chinese and independent living. The problem is while she can speak and understand Chinese, she can only read a few Chinese words (we thought Chinese was more difficult to learn, so we decided to let her learn English first). The Chinese curriculum was so difficult for her and the words were so difficult because others have spend 9 years learning Chinese.
We learned about the Glenn Doman’s method by Christmas. I started out slowly 5 words using the 5×8 cards with 3 inch Chinese words on them. It worked. She could read the words before dictation came. She only had to learn towrite them instead of learning reading and writing at the same time. She was so fascinated to read the menu, signs and children’s books or newspaper. The words started to talk to her as said in the book. Using the each flash card for about 15 times(as said in the book), she could recognize the word quite well. Sure, needs to do revision. She loves the food category the best. She is so much more confident at school. At the mean time, I read “What to do with your brain injured child” and “How to teach you baby to read” ordered from Amazon. The book’s theory explained to me how it works. I highly recommend this book to anyone especially kids with specially needs that take longer time to learn.
