Smart Baby Reading at 12 Months (Part 2)

Here’s baby Felicity reading again, this time mainly reading the words out loud, like Daddy, Mommy, baby, ball, knee, cup, bubble, dog and some Chinese words. No one had to force her (we do not believe in forcing!), and sometimes you can’t drag her away from her books. Note When this video was taken, she did not know phonics, in that she either recognizes the word, or she doesn’t. If your definition of “reading” means she must know phonics, then she doesn’t know how to read. But then, that would also mean that people ‘reading’ languages such as Chinese do not know how to read either, because you either recognize the Chinese character(s) or you don’t. Having said that, we’ve found that the more a child is exposed to words (even if they are merely memorizing the words at first), they figure out the phonics rules for themselves intuitively and very quickly. If your definition of reading is phonetical reading, then yes, you are correct. The video shows “whole word” or “sight” reading. Babies start of reading that way and progress to reading phonetically (by intuiting the phonics rules) over time. Read up about the Whole Words vs Phonics debate on the BrillBaby site.
It’s like showing a kid a picture of a ball and they then say ‘ball’ when they see it. It’s not that you’ve taught them to read, you’ve taught them to recognise a picture or word and what sounding word or action i associated with it. It’s a start and a very well done to you!

I’m going to try this with my son. He is 11 months and is picking up one or two new words per day although he only sounds out the first part of the word he understands very well and often surprises me with new words that I didn’t teach him. I’ll definitely check out the site.

Hi, thanks for sharing with us such an inspiring video about baby reading at such a young age!! No doubt Felic is so cute! My boy is 13 months now I am keen to start GD reading with him ASAP, whether he will turn out to be a good reader or not, isn’t really my main concern, it’s afterall a good spending time together! I have a QUESTION for you please: May I know if I should teach him “just the Text” OR should I go with “Text then Picture and so on”?
