Using tap water to make baby formula is probably not a wise decision given the possible contaminants that can exist in tap water nowadays. If you are a parent, please read this article in its entirety. I have some valuable information to share with you. Are you aware of just how vulnerable your baby is?
1. Microbial Threats
In the spring of 1993 a microscopic parasite called Cryptosporidium parvum was responsible for more than 100 deaths in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It arrived via the city’s water supply because a water treatment plant failed to filter it out. Nowadays stricter regulations help to ensure that our drinking water is monitored and treated efficiently before ending up at our taps.
However we should not relax because there still are a number of waterborne bacteria that still cause illnesses. The list includes nontyphoid Salmonella, pathogenic Escherichia coli and Legionella. All are still very active, Legionella grows vigorously in warm water, such as in a shower where it can be inhaled through the steam.
2. Lead
Perhaps the most feared of all contaminants because of the damage it can cause to the brain. A recent sampling of tap water in Washington D.C. exposed lead levels five times the EPA standard. The lead is most likely to come from your own household plumbing. This can happen if your house has lead pipes, or copper pipes soldered with lead and it also depends on the age of your house.
In fact the EPA recommend that you only use cold water for cooking, drinking and especially for making baby formula. This is because your hot water is more than likely to contain higher concentrations of lead. You are at the greatest risk from any exposure to lead if you are a young child or if you are pregnant
3. Chlorinated solvents
Do you use any of the following, drain cleaners, shoe polish, waxes, oven cleaners? These contain chlorinated solvents, they belong to a chemical family that is widely used in household and industrial processes. In 2006 samples of drinking water in twelve states were examined and ten percent were contaminated with chlorinated solvents.
4. Chemical Contaminants
Over the years we have produced many synthetic organic chemicals such as antibiotics, herbicides, pesticides to name but a few. Many of these find their way into our water supplies, through various means, whether from illegal dumping of waste material or through the action of rain water. Once these end up in our drinking water they posses a very real threat to our health.
When they do end up in our water supply, according to the authorities they are at “such a low concentration that they do not pose a health risk to consumers.” It sounds very comforting, however I would ask what about the long term exposure to these low concentrations? A low level of pollutant probably would not affect an adult, but what would it do to a child?
5. Chlorine
Chlorine has been used in our water supply for around one hundred years now. It is still a valuable and effective disinfectant, and it keeps working all the way up to your tap. However chlorine does have an Achilles heel, water naturally contains organic matter and when this comes into contact with chlorine the result is disinfection by-products. These by-products can affect the health of your central nervous system, liver and kidneys.
Your baby is extremely vulnerable to any one these contaminants so it’s a good idea to stop using tap water to make baby formula today. What you need to do is obtain an effective water purifier. May I suggest a combination of active carbon filters, ion exchange, and sub micron filtration. This will help remove of virtually all the contaminants present in water. If possible, get a whole house water system and make sure you use purified water for all your baby’s needs. This way, you can ensure that your baby stays safe and healthy.

Five Reasons To Stop Using Tap Water To Make Baby Formula
Wednesday, July 21st, 2010Using Tap Water to Make Baby Formula? You Must Read This Shocking Truth
Sunday, June 27th, 2010 Have you ever tried using tap water to make baby formula? If you have not, give yourself a pat on the back. If you have, please stop doing it right away. A lot of people are not aware of the health risks involved in using tap water for drinking or for cooking purposes.
So, it is not uncommon to see people using tap water to clean vegetables and meat and for other cooking purposes. However, it is not advisable at all. Let us see why it is so. So, why is using tap water to make baby formula considered such a bad idea anyway? It is simple. The tap water that you use to make baby formula is contaminated beyond belief. It is not advisable to use tap water for drinking, cooking, or to even clean or wash your food items.
There is a big list of waterborne diseases that you can get by using tap water. So, you should stay away from it. Before using tap water to make baby formula, you should know some of the ‘stuff’ that is present in the tap water that you use. Prescription drugs, heavy metals, and pesticide and herbicide wastes are some of the commonly found items in tap water.
Do you find it hard to believe? Actually, it is the truth. This is the reason why physicians and health experts across the country suggest using a water purifier to stay away from health problems. If you drink tap water and use it for cooking purposes, you are risking your health big time. You can get a number of diseases – right from amoebiasis to botulism and cholera. Just imagine – if this kind of risk is involved in drinking tap water, how can anyone think of using tap water to make baby formula? If an adult body is not suited for drinking contaminated water, what can we even say about a tiny little baby?
This is the reason why it is considered really risky to use tap water to make baby food. The worst part is that it is not just about the diseases alone. Consuming contaminated water right from the beginning can have devastating effects on your baby’s normal growth – both mental and physical growth. It can hinder growth tremendously and can lead to so many other problems, some of which might be very serious in the future. In a nutshell – stop using tap water to make baby formula.
So, what is the solution? The simplest, and the most obvious, solution is to get a good water purifier. Skin experts these days suggest that activated carbon filters are very good at removing contaminants from water. This method is considered better than reverse osmosis and point of use distillation as it not only destroys all types of contaminants present in water, but also retains the essential minerals present naturally in water – unlike the other two methods.
The bottom line is simple. Stop using tap water to make baby formula or any other baby food for that matter. Get a good water purifier today and use pure water to ensure good health to you and your family.
Are You Using Tap Water to Make Baby Formula? Why You Should be Concerned
Tuesday, June 15th, 2010Using tap water to make baby formula is a bad idea…unless you have a home filtration device on your kitchen faucet. In practically every store, you’ll see jugs and jugs of bottled water. Some of them even bare the label “nursery water”. In case you haven’t read the latest news, let me tell you a little bit about those jugs.
Phthalates
Phthalates (pronounced tha-lates) are plasticizers found in many consumer products. For many years, scientists have known that these chemicals disrupt the endocrine system, which affects the natural production of hormones.
According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2008, “Young infants are more vulnerable to the potential adverse effects of phthalates given their increased dosage per unit body surface area, metabolic capabilities and developing endocrine and reproductive systems.”
In other words, we want to avoid exposing our babies to these chemicals. They can cause developmental problems, changes in their reproductive organs and many other health problems. They may even predispose their cells to cancer.
The chemical is found in infant powders, lotions and shampoos. It is absorbed through the skin and enters the blood stream. Water stored in plastic jugs absorbs components used to make them.
So, while using tap water to make baby formula is not a good idea, using bottled water is not the best option, either. A home purification system is the ideal choice.
BPA
BPA or Bisphenol-A is a plastic polymer used to make hard plastics. It is another endocrine disruptor. It is used to make infant bottles and training cups. There are now many BPA-free products on the market and it’s worth your while to look for them.
Although BPA is not commonly used to make water jugs or bottles, it is used occasionally. It is believed that the combination of chemicals that we are exposed to early on in life, contributes to major health problems, later.Next, we look at the major problems with using tap water to make baby formula.
Cysts
Parasitic cysts, primarily cryptosporidium and giardia, may be in any public source and even in bottled brands of water, at any time, according to the US EPA. These parasites can make an infant very ill. A home filtration device with a submicron filter will remove more than 99% of all cysts and the systems are not that expensive. If you are using tap water to make baby formula and you do not have a home water filter, you should, at the very least, boil the water first. In some cases, cysts infections have been fatal. Boiling removes cysts, but it doesn’t remove chemical contaminants that are commonly present in publicly treated water. One is almost always present.
I strongly recommend a home water filter that addresses all dangerous contaminants found in tap water.
Chlorine
Although the levels of chlorine in publicly treated water are considered “safe” for an adult, they are not safe for an infant. According to the US EPA, chlorine causes anemia in children.
You will need a water filter that incorporates activated granular carbon working synergistically with a multi media block to block the chemical contaminants, a sub micron filter for parasites and bacteria, and an ion exchange for heavy metals. Ion exchange will also mineralize your water, and adjust pH levels.
A high quality tap water filter with all of these features will only cost you around $125. See resource box for my personal recommendation. A good home filtration device removes the threat and is the safest choice, when it comes to using tap water to make baby formula. Buy a good device as outlined above. Do it today.
